  • Over £20,000 now raised by his #CV19for19 challenge for the Manx Solidarity Fund

  • Marathon #11 completed earlier today

  • Video messages of support come in from sporting stars

Christian Varley smashed through his fundraising target of £19,000 as he completed his 11th consecutive marathon today (11th May) in his push to complete 19 marathons in 19 consecutive days. His mammoth effort has raised over £20,000 to date with donations still pouring in.

Christian is raising money for the Manx Solidarity Fund, which was recently formed to provide financial support for local individuals, charities and businesses negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

His incredible achievements to date have also attracted the attention of major sporting stars, some of who have sent in video messages of support. They include: former Everton FC striker, Tim Cahill; two-time winner of the Ironman World Championship, Christian McCormack; and former World Champion boxer Tony Bellew.

Just before being flagged off on his 11th consecutive marathon earlier today by well-known figure in the local sporting community, Dot Tilbury MBE, Christian said:

‘The support I have received from the Manx public has been amazing and I would like to thank all those who have donated so far. Receiving the video messages really helped me in the build-up to today’s run.  Chris McCormack in particular is a real idol of mine so I really appreciate him sparing the time from the other side of the world to wish me luck.’

Melanie Kermeen, Trustee, Manx Solidarity Fund said:

‘What an incredible achievement by Christian! He has already smashed his target fundraising goal and his attitude of perseverance, dedication and resilience embodies the Manx spirit.  His challenge has really captured the interest of the community and increased awareness of the Manx Solidarity Fund.

‘Christian’s job at Manx Sport and Recreation is to inspire people to exercise and he is certainly setting an amazing example and motivating many with this personal challenge. Thank you Christian! A big thank you also to those who have been supporting Christian and for remembering the social distancing guidelines.’

Thanks to the incredible generosity of donors from across the local community well over £300,000 has been raised in total for the Manx Solidarity Fund to date.
